The Swedish Research Council for Health, Working Life and Welfare, FORTE, operates according to the directions of the Swedish Government. FORTE is one of three governmental research councils and one of six governmental research funding bodies. FORTE's task is to promote and support basic research and needs-driven research in the working life field and within social science and public health science.

FORTE's remit also includes informing and carrying on dialogue with other parties within FORTE's areas of responsibility and with other research environments. This dialogue shall concern the Council's activity and the results that emerge from FORTE-funded research.

A third task is to strategically analyse, develop and evaluate the research and the research requirements that exist within its sphere.

A further task is to participate in the coordination group which, according to the decision of the Swedish government, is comprised of the heads of FORTE, Vinnova, the Swedish Research Council and Formas. This group shall work together to produce joint analyses, strategies and research programmes and otherwise take initiatives to develop and renew the forms of research activity.
