EpiLife Doctoral School

The mission of the EpiLife Doctoral School is to educate doctoral students in the field of public health epidemiology, clinical epidemiology, and particularly life course epidemiology in a top quality research environment. The EpiLife Doctoral School welcomes doctoral students with scientific interests focused on mental and/or physical health in a life course perspective, which is the overall research theme of the EpiLife Center.

Based on these premises, the specific aim of the school is to support PhD students in investigating common determinants of mental and physical well-being, as well as how these factors interact and relate to the social environment. Through the education of doctoral students, the research school promotes capacity for using existing epidemiological methods and tools, while also supporting development of novel methodologies.

The basis of the research is the unique longitudinal and ongoing population-based studies that constitute the core of the EpiLife research activities. Moreover, the scientific collaboration within the EpiLife allows the unification of several diverse research groups giving a broader view to the students. The latter are recruited from different faculties with the aim to boost translational research. The school also promotes access to national and international research networks, facilitating the creation and further reinforcement of scientific collaboration both at the national and the international level.

Within the EpiLife, the doctoral students benefit from the school’s expertise, facilities and training in research and can also contribute to knowledge transfer from academia to both clinical and population settings. The school is also supporting skilled statisticians providing the support for advanced and cutting edge methods and also offers regular activities for students in the form of seminars, theme days and scientific discussions with senior researchers, as well as courses in epidemiology.

In conclusion, the platform of the EpiLife Doctoral School is to intensify, integrate and develop the long tradition of longitudinal studies in Gothenburg as well as to work as a ‘gathering point’ for students within the center to enable them to take advantage of the dynamic and multidisciplinary research environment.
